We have owned this trash can for a couple of years and I can say without hesitation that it is one of the best purchases we have ever made. I had gotten so tired of having the trash bags get stuck in our old cylindrical can and/or get ripped on the way out. Or, worse, have the bag fall down into the can because there was no way to firmly secure the bag and then get stuck cleaning out a nasty mess of goo. This trash can takes care of all these problems for us, and it looks sleek in our kitchen, too, which is a huge plus. It says it is an outdoor can, but we use it in our kitchen anyway. The seal for the inner lid keeps odors out of the kitchen entirely -- a huge plus for me and my sensitive nose. The "secure lock" outer lid is really genius once you figure out how to unlock it (the problem the prior reviewer had): there are thick rubber straps that secure the lid that simply have to be lifted up from the handles in order to lift the whole lid;they are located on either side of the trash can, on the outer edges, looped over the plastic handles that stick out to be able to lift the can. You just pull up and over the rubber gasket-type material fasteners from those handles, and then the whole upper lid unit comes off and you can easily pull out your trash bag (no more evil suction problems, the shape of this can makes it very easy to pull out the bag without strain) and then replace it with an empty bag, put the lid back on and re-lock it into place by stretching the rubber-gasket fasteners back over the handles. Because it locks the bag in place, we never have leaks into the can any longer. I cannot say enough good things about this trash can. If ours ever wears out, I will definitely buy another one. Several of our family and friends have purchased them as well, after seeing ours and they all love it. I wish I could say more, but this is one product which was worth every penny and then some -- my husband laughed at the purchase price when I bought it, but he isn't laughing now: he loves it, too, because we haven't had a trash mess or smell to deal with since we bought it. Well worth ordering. Will replace ours with another if we ever need to do so, but the construction of this can is so sturdy, I can't imagine we will.

We have an enterprising dog that can get into any trashcan around. This can seemed sturdy, with a tight fitting locking lid and even though it's large for the avg kitchen (16 gallons!), we decided to try it. We (2 reasonably intelligent, handy people) could not get the lid to open. It "snaps in place tightly" - they got that right! Maybe there is a trick to it- nope- no instructions, no unlocking mechanisms- it is impossible to get the larger lid to open and the smaller inner lid is locked inside and cannot be accessed without opening the larger lid. Im not going to fight with this can everyday. So, unless you know something we dont or have masochistic tendencies- find a better trash can (atleast a functiong one!)

The price was great and it works flawlessly. The only gripe I have about it is that the mounting device requires it so sit over the lip of the aquarium making it impossible for me to keep the water level at the required fill line on the heater. Still keeps the temperature in the tank at a wonderful 79 degrees but I do wish it could be lowered further into the tank.

This heater was absolutely perfect! Its easy to use and as long as used properly in a 2-5 gallon tank works perfectly! It brought my 2.5-3 gallon tank from 71 degree F to a comfortable 76-77 degrees which is great for my little betta Herbert =] Its great for dorm room (which I currently live in) because its simple and non obtrusive. if you have a small tank and just need to bring it a few degrees this is what you need, just be sure to monitor room temp. because it will keep the tank temp. a few degrees above that and since we keep the room a about 72-73 degrees usually it keeps his tank at a toasty 76-77. Again this really was a perfect solution for my tank and gently brought the temperature up from 71 degrees, this was great because it didn't require me removing herbert as he adjusted naturally over about 24 hours. I purchased this unit to heat my 2 gallon fishbowl that was home for my male Betta (Regi). The instructions are simple and it can be submerged OR put under the bowl to heat the water. I tried putting it under the bowl and found that didn't work at all. Next I submerged it in the bowl but the bowl is small and even when the unit was buried under the gravel it looked really crappy ( a bit like Homer Simpson's spice rack). So I abandoned the 2 gallon bowl and purchased a 5 gallon tank. The heater works well in the 5 gal. I would definitely suggest getting a thermometer though. It keeps the water at approximately 80, but on really hot days the temperature in such a small tank can soar so you need some way to monitor that. On hot days when I can see that the temperature is climbing I unplug the unit.

I wouldn't say that I am completely satisfied with this unit. I would be happy if it had an automatic shut-off and temperature adjustment valve. But it does work (as stated) and is useful if you have small water environments.

This has worked fine for me and I got it for just under twelve dollars. My only problem is that sometimes I'm not sure it's working and I am not sure how it regulates the temperature... But it's worked great so far and I've had it for a month. Plug it in and it will slowly heat the tank up to the desired temperature, which I think is two or three degrees above room temperature so it helps to keep your room temperature constant and at 75-77 degrees.

The important thing to know about this little heater is that it warms up to 5 gallons of water about 5 degrees above the room temperature. So if the room the aquarium is located in gets cold at night, say 58 degrees, the heater will keep the aquarium water at about 63 degrees and similarly, if the room heats up to 78 degrees during the day, the aquarium water would be heated to 83 degrees. That's too wide of a temperature range for most tropical fish. I used this heater for about a week and replaced it with a standard aquarium heater that will keep the water at the same temperature regardless of the room temperature.

My apartment (and thus my fish tank) stays around 68 in the winter and 72 in the summer, so I bought this for the 1 gallon tank that houses my betta fish. With the heater, my fish tank stays between 71-73 in the winter and 74-76 in the summer which is a comfortable temperature for most tropical fish. I've had it for a while without any problems, although when I first got it and plugged it in I was thinking that it didn't work because it just wasn't heating the water (it was winter and the tank water had fallen to a dangerous-for-tropical-fish 62), but in reality it was working fine. It just needed a while to make a sizable difference in temperature.

Not only is this "Ameriwood" product not wood-it's not even wood veneer. Apart from the cabinet doors, it's chips glued together and covered with chintzy looking plastic false wood-grain. The "wood" in the name must refer to "wood" chips. It arrived with even the plastic coating chipped, exposing the chip interior of the boards. I ordered it from Stacks and Stacks, who ignored my two emails requesting a return. Sending out wood-chip boards (which by nature deteriorate when wet, ask any carpenter) for an aquarium stand (which, by the nature of its function, increases the likelihood of the stand getting at least somewhat damp eventually, during cleanings), especially when the water-repelling outer covering is chipped, is not only not aesthetic but dangerous to people and property. I advise against this purchase in general, and very strongly against this purchase from Stacks and Stacks. If you have your heart set on this product, please take my advise and buy it from a vendor other than Stacks and Stacks, since other customers have said that although the stand itself arrived in poor quality, other vendors were more accommodating regarding their grievances.

The pieces where chipped when i opened the box, and as i put it together, i found out the door panals were merely glued on and they came off. However, customer service must realize how crappy thier product is because they were very accomodating with sending out replacements. This is a nice looking, sturdy stand. Perfect for the purpose. Accepting the fact that this item is being shipped to me I accepted the reality that the box would have to withstand some man-handling. Upon arrival the box was in good shape. I guess this item is too heavy to throw around; helps to have another person to move it into the house. The only issue that I have with the product is its packaging. The top board showed some wear on its surface. Looks like friction wore an inch of the wood stain off. I touched it up but an aquarium will be covering this spot so it isn't a huge deal. One other board had a nick in it but the section with the blemish is concealed by another board. Bottom line: I would recommend this stand. It's easy to put together, and it looks great.

This ia a nice sized product with a decent amount of storage space, and it looks nice. The size is good. The main negatives are that it came with several scratches, takes over an hour to put together and, most importantly, if it gets any water on it that doesn't get wiped off very quickly, there will be a slight amount of bubble damage at the surface (not a great quality for an aquarium stand). However, if aware of this and careful to clean up quickly, it isn't a major problem, and the scratches were easily covered with a mood marker pen.

Overall, it is a good product for the money.

"Not worth it" 2010-04-30

Got this tank to house my betta because it had a filter on it and could aerate the water better and used it for about 7 months. The whisper 3i filter couldn't keep up with the bioload of 1 fish and after a few months only had a trickle of water. The test paramenters of this tank never leveled off either. Additionally the air pump was very loud and stopped working after about a month. I also had to buy a valve to prevent the water from getting into the pump. My last frutration was that the top was always covered with drops of water and it wasnot secure at all. My very bad cat could knock the top off with one swipe of his paw so eventually I had to tape the top into place. I think as a starter tank just spend the extra 20$ and get yourself a 5 gallon. Then you could even have a few other fish in the tank too!!

I bought this tank at PetSmart about a week ago, and so far I'm impressed. The kit includes the Whisper 3i in-tank filter, a couple of bio filter replacement cartridges, tubing, pump, LED light, and two plastic plants that can be attached on a grid like system that runs along the bottom of the tank (there are 8 possible positions). It doesn't come with water treatment, gravel, or food, but it does have a convenient storage shelf that pulls out from the bottom for these items.

Before this tank, I had my Betta in a small Marina cube, which only held a half Liter of water. Two weeks later, I decided to upgrade to this kit. After a day of adjustment, my fish really began to enjoy his new home and has since built a bubble nest. The LED can swivel from side to side and adjust up or down, so I like to angle it towards the filter in the back corner. This allows enough light to illuminate the tank nicely, but avoids exposing my Betta to direct bright light when I have it on. The light itself it great. Using LEDs means very little electricity usage, as well as almost no heat output. The switch is located on the side, so it's easily turned on and off. My only complaint is that the light tends to slide down to a certain point when you raise it all the way up. Not a big deal, but something to note.

The filter has kept the water nice and clear so far. It's easily attached anywhere on the tank via two suction cups on the back end. The top lid of the tank has two small holes on either side for the hose, as well as a large hole for easy grabbing. The two holes are great if you'd like to add a small water heater along with your filter. The Whisper 3i does create a fairly noticeable current in a tank this small, something my Betta did not enjoy at first as they prefer still water. After some adjustment of the plants in the tank and raising it a little higher above water level, the current was reduced enough to not really bother him. I've also placed a small hut in the tank where he can hide and get out of the current if he chooses to do so (which I recommend). I would also recommend placing the plants near or around the filter intake, so your fish won't be tempted to swim around it and get pulled by the pump. A Betta is far to large to get stuck, but it can damage his fins if he's pulled to hard.

The plastic plants are very nice looking, but were somewhat on the hard side. I would keep an eye and make sure your fish doesn't injure his fins grazing against them. So far, mine hasn't had any issues, but it's something to take note of, especially for Bettas.

Overall, for the money you won't find a better tank for a small fish or Betta.

UPDATE: 8/10/2010

After about 4 months of owning this tank, the filter pump finally gave out. It's a shame, because it did work very well. While not a big deal if your housing a Betta, this may become problem for other types of fish that aren't labyrinth fish. Tetra does warranty the filter for 1 year after purchase, but you have to send $5.00 for return postage. The whole filter unit can be purchased for $9.95 new at PetSmart, so it really seems kinda pointless, especially if it will continue to crap out after a few months.

We got this for our daughter for Christmas to have 2 tiny fish. The tank isn't even big enough for the filter to fit inside it. There is no opening in the top for a heater to be plugged in. Generally, it is a disappointment. It doesn't look at all good with the filter and the heater laying in diagonally and the lid propped open. Go with a different choice. The picture that is on the box is NOT what you will have.

I had always wanted a small, but attractive, aquarium for my desk. I came across this one on Amazon and thought, this is it! It works great with African Dwarf Frogs, I bought two and there is plenty of room for them and their plants. The initial investment ran me about $40 total which included food, a small net, the plant, rocks, water conditioner, etc. I did find mine at Petsmart, but there are more colors/sizes and a lot of sale prices through Amazon that were comparable. I loved the light because its made of LEDs and does not get hot. I'm rather paranoid about hot light bulbs and plastic.

"Great value, but some extra care needed for acrylic." 2010-08-30

This tank is a pretty good value and comes with pretty much everything that is needed to get started. One thing that I have found is that acrylic scratches very easily. I received the tank with a pretty nice scratch in one of the sides, but didn't notice until I had water in it. It is not bad enough for me to return it, but I have added a few small scratches when i was cleaning it up with a paper towel. The paper towel left a few very small scratches where I wiped up some finger prints from my son. I was able to buff them out with a microfiber cloth and some elbow grease, but I can see this tank will take a little extra care than glass.

On a side note, the tank does seem much clearer than glass and i like it because it is also weighs less than a glass tank.

I currently have the Eclipse Hex 5 gallon and Eclipse 6 gallon bow front aquariums. These are the best aquariums I have ever had. Previously, I had glass aquariums with air pumps and outside filtration systems. The eclipse systems are so easy to maintain and are very quiet. I have the 6 gallon in my two year old daughter's room and you cannot hear it running. The 5 gallon Hex is on the bar area between our kitchen and family room so it is visible from all angles.

These tanks are very neat in appearance, as there are not pieces and parts hanging off the back with lots of cords running everywhere. And, the only thing you can see inside the tank is the filter suction tube, which can be somewhat concealed by a strategically place plant. You can practically place the tank up against the wall without problems,too.

I do have my tanks overstocked, which requires more frequent partial water changes and changing of the filters; However, everyone is happy and healthy and I enjoy having the tanks quite a bit...So, for me, it's not an inconvenience or troublesome chore. The filtration system is wonderful and keeps the water crystal clear.

In the 5 gallon we have a male Betta, 3 Rasboras, 2 very small Cory Cats, and one Mystery snail. In the 6 gallon we have a male Betta, 5 Neon Tetras, 2 small Cory Cats, and 2 Mystery snails.

We have ejoyed these two tanks so much that we are now going to get the 12 gallon for our Master Bed Room. I love to lay on the bed in the evenings, just before going to sleep, and watch the fish. It is very relaxing.

The only down side to these tanks, that I have found, is that the acrylic scratches easily...so you have to be very careful when cleaning and use scrapers and pads that are specifically designed for acrylic tanks. To keep the exterior of the tank clean, I use a cloth baby diaper. They are cotton, very soft and do not scratch the tank.

I bought the 3 gallon aquarium to house my male betta fish by himself. I was very excited about this aquarium because of the biowheel, some people may not agree, but I think that it's a great filtration system for a small aquarium. My local aquarium store also will give you a biowheel that already has been used to reduce the new tank syndrome. Anyway, the second week I had this aquarium I started to smell burning plastic while the light was on. I realized the light was overheating the plastic next to it when left on for more than an hour and it was melting! I considered taking it back, but Oscar was already situated and it sounded like too much of a hassle. Over a year later, I wish I had because now I only turn the light on to feed him or to look at him. Which I feel like defeats the purpose of doing all the work of care-taking if you can't even see the fruit of your labor!

Another problem this aquarium has is the design of the lid which other people have mentioned. The 3 gallon aquarium has NO door to feed the fish at all. So to feed you have to lift the entire lid! Annoying, and also gross because you get aquarium fishy water on your hands every time! I'd like to just feed without getting wet, just once!

But there are positives. This is a good starter aquarium for the price the filtration is much better than other cheap starter kits, just hope you buy one of the lids that isn't going to melt when you use the light.

Right now I have 3 angelfish and 1 pleaco. I love that it is quiet and easy to maintain. Just change the filter and part of the water every month or so. Well, and feed the fish. I've never had a heater in it. It has kept a temp of about 77. I turn the light on when I'm at work and off when I leave. Must be the motor keeping it warm. Speaking of which the filter motor died last week, and I had to replace it. I love, love, love this tank! I got this tank as a gift about 3 or 4 years ago. It has been set up on my desk since I received it. I have had live plants and various fish. Sometimes a betta and a few corys.

I just purchased the 3 gallon tank of this for my female betta. It's cute and has lots of space. However if you fill the tank past the line as indicated by the directions, the water will leak out from the rim. In order to get the bio-wheel going, you have to follow the directions exactly. Make sure everything's in place and then you'll see the wheel start spinning. So far it's a great place to home any small fish you might have...my only complaint is that the filter is too noisy. Maybe my filter's just faulty or something. I don't know about any other customers who've had this problem. :) But that's an easy fix so it's not so bad. Overall pretty good for the price!

This is an outstanding little guide book for the salamander and newt fancier -- perhaps the best and most up-to-date that I have yet seen! Salamanders and newts can be hardy and rewarding terrarium inhabitants, provided that certain critical requirements are met, particularly in regard to providing the proper substrate, hiding places, cool temperatures, etc. The author provides many helpful suggestions regarding these factors that I am certain would be quite helpful to both beginning and advanced hobbyists.

All the major groups of salamanders are covered here, with some of the most interesting species from each group being given particular attention. Significantly, one whole chapter is devoted to one of the most enchanting species of all, the European fire salamander. This species is in a class by itself, with its large size, vivid black and yellow color pattern, prominent coal-black eyes, and responsive personality. (One of these is pictured on the cover.) The American mole salamander family, including the showy but secretive marbled and spotted salamanders and the large, feisty tiger salamander, are similar in their requirements and equally interesting.

A well planned terrarium containing some of these colorful creatures can be just like bringing a part of the outdoors, complete with its colorful fauna, into the home environment, and it can provide a great deal of satisfaction to observe their habits. Whether you already have some salamanders and newts or are contemplating buying some, this book is rather brief but has a great deal of helpful advice. Highly recommended.

I found this book well organized and enjoyable to read. I am a casual reader of herp books because I like all reptiles and amphibians and this book is suitable for someone like me who wants to learn about this order of amphibian, or for the beginner and intermediate owners of these animals. Although newts and salamanders inhabit a range of environments, Edmonds was successful in letting the readers know how to properly care for each of the more common species. The chapters on housing, diet and health contains detailed information so a beginner can learn how to care for them properly. A more advance hobbyist will find his information on breeding informative enough to actually try to proceed with is critical aspect of owning newts and salamanders. He discusses the need for people to try to breed them in captivity and to keep good records and share the information due to the decline of their wild populations. The book should be in the hands of every newt or salamander owner and I intend to buy a copy for a friend who owns an axolotls.

"I'm not crazy about it" 2010-08-05

I have many years experience with two different models of Whisper's HOB filters. I have always been pleased with them. A couple of years ago when setting up a 10g tank for my daughter I decided to try a bio wheel 100. It works and I am still using it, but I have been kind of disappointed for several reasons.

I dislike several things about the replacement cartridges. First, they are expensive. Second, because they are sealed one-piece units you have to throw the whole thing away when servicing the filter. I much prefer the Whisper system employing a reusable plastic frame over which you slide replacement filter sleeves. Less waste, less trash in the landfill. Also being sealed, you have no options on the use of carbon or other media in these cartridges. Personally I am not a fan of using carbon in my aquariums. I don't hate it, but I think it is unnecessary. On the Whisper filters I simply left it out. I guess I could cut a slice in the Penguin cartridges and try to shake out the carbon, but that is a hassle. On the other hand, for people who are big fans of carbon, there is no option to add additional carbon (or any other type of chemical media) in these cartridges. On the Whisper cartridges there is room to add double, or even triple, the normal amount of carbon if you wish. No such option on these. What you get is what you get. Third, the cartridges are overly complicated and too easy to insert incorrectly. There are eight possible orientations that you could try to insert the cartridge into the filter, and only one is right. It is relatively easy to figure out, but my 12 year old daughter has gotten it wrong several times. There is no reason for it to be so complicated or finicky.

The filter is also much more finicky than the Whispers are about priming and restarting after being serviced. It seems that the impeller is very easily air-locked. It is common for mine to grind and growl for 2 or 3 minutes before purging itself of air and pumping again. And this is with the tank and filter both completely full of water. Not a big deal, but it seems a design weakness to me.

Lastly are issues with the bio-wheel itself. Initially I thought this seemed like a good idea, but the more I looked at it and thought about it the more I came to think that its many cynics might be right; this thing is probably 90% gimmick. I admit that it does a great job of exposing beneficial bacteria to both water and air (when it is actually turning - more on this below) but I have a hard time believing that it has anywhere near the surface area needed to truly be an effective biological filter. That does not make it bad, just useless.

As to the bio-wheel turning, this is a never ending issue. And from reading on the web I see that I am far from alone. It seems that the maximum flow rate the filter can produce under ideal conditions is extremely close to the minimum flow rate required to turn the wheel. I would guess that only about a 10% reduction in flow rate is required to stall the wheel. And this reduction can be caused by: a slightly dirty cartridge, a slightly dirty inlet tube, a slightly dirty impeller, a slightly low tank level (maybe only as much as 1" low). Also affecting the turning is the cleanliness of the friction points on the wheel and/or housing. This model has no kind of "bearings", it is just plastic rubbing on plastic. But if either part gets a bit dirty, or has a bit of mineral build up on it, the wheel stalls.

It's not a terrible product, but if I buy another HOB filter, it won't be a bio-wheel.

I purchased this without doing much shopping around and I regret it. I'm running it in a 20 gal aquarium I recently pulled out of storage and am disappointed. The filtration is about average (and adequate for my tank) for this type of filter, but, compared to the two other hang on the back filters I've had this one is much too loud.

It's the impeller and it makes a rattling noise. I've taken it out and cleaned it, and let it run for 48 hours, and then stopped it and reseated it, hoping to get it to quiet down, but to no avail. I've had it running for 4 days now and haven't even put any fish in because I don't want to stress them out from the noise and vibrations. I don't think I'll return it, but it's looking more like a waste of money every day.

this thing is noisy (from the impeller). Its installed correctly and I went through the troubleshooting

section even though its pretty basic on how to install everything. I have older bio wheel filters and they seem

to have cut corners in the quality lately. I emailed the company to see if they will send me a replacement

impeller and they do not even bother to reply. Time to go to a company that makes better products and cares about the consumer..

UPDATE-

I rec'd a new impeller from the seller few months ago and it has been very quiet. Keeping the tank crystal clear and all of the

parameters are within normal limits.

I got my fish tank in 1998 and had an older BioWheel filter. However it was pretty much DOA when I got it as the wheel didn't turn. I instead settled for an underground filter. However, the cartridge on that went bad last year (it always does every few months) and I forgot to replace it.

A few weeks ago I went to my Uncle's house. He's always been into fish tanks and I saw how clear his water was compared to mine. Being that I hadn't cleaned my tank in a while I figured I should revamp it when I got home. I thought maybe my filter needed replaced.

Upon my return home I cleaned the tank and bought this filter for $20 at Petsmart (Amazon is great but the $31 seems a bit high for this compared to what I got it for). It only took a few hours and my water suddenly looked as good as my Uncle's.

I also fixed the old filter, but this one works better. Sometimes I leave both of them on to provide extra oxygen. This filter has easy to change cartridges that need replaced about once a month or so. They'll probably set you back a bit, but based on this filter's performance so far I will definitely keep up the maintence.

I think this is an ok filter, it definitely does its job of providing chemical and mechanical filtration, but heres a tip.

I do ALOT of work with fish tanks and supplies. One thing I have noticed from cleaning, fixing and modifying aquarium supplies is that in the last few years, maybe a little longer, marineland has started using cheaper parts.

I have an older model of this filter and it has adjustable flow and a bit better construction. I liked it, so I bought a new one. The newer one is noticeably cheaper in construction and components, no flow control knob and after four months it periodically grinds and it is LOUD! I hear it across my decent sized home.

So bottom line, it does its job as a filter, and in my opinion its a great filter. Just has a few things it could improve on.

My friend (later in the review) has this exact model and has no complants about it.

Ok... so I think the noise a lot of the people are talking about with these reviews are people that ether don't know how to correctly prime a filter of this design, or they didn't even try to see if they had the tube correctly seated on the propeller. Trust me folks you will know the difference in sound if you put the tube in wrong... And as for priming the water in the filter, the tank need to be "full" almost touching the bottom of the reservoir flow over. That's where the water level is supposed to be when using this kind of filter.

I'm going to be honest to you guys, I did the fish thing for about 2 years in a fresh water 55 long. And it just got to where I couldn't keep it maintained the way it needed to be and sold off every thing (fish included) to a friend. One thing I do know is this, every single ones of these hang off the back filters are going to make some noise simply due to the fact water transfers sound better then just about anything. Also this filter uses a completely sealed stator (for obvious water proofing reasons) and you can't get a precision fit on the rotor (propeller). On a motor like that there is going to be some rotor wobble that makes noise (let's not forget the AC buzz ALL STRAIGHT AC MOTORS MAKE). I had this filter shortly after going through and "testing" a few others so let's say almost 2 years. After I sold it to my friend I think the thing lasted a good year after that (around 3 total). He is still using this type and brand of filter today in the tank I sold him, some of the fish are deferent but same stuff lol...

What does all that have to do with this review? Not a whole lot but this type of filter is going to make noise to a degree because of how it's incorporated to filter the water (hanging on the back of a "glass water filled thing"). You`re just going to have to deal with it. If you must have complete scilence, I would look into (also read up on if unfamiliar) a canister set up. I've found this brand makes the least noise and that's why I initially stuck with it. As time went on I found they work vary well and that bio wheel really dose help "good bacteria" find a home in large amounts where it wont be unsightly to look at. And the filters could not be more idiot proof and effective. The ribs keep the carbon from settling in the bottom unlike them cheap slide on kind and they fit like a glove and filter virtually all water that goes though the filter.

Here is some common info for first time owners of this type of filter:

Also folks keep the things clean, you have to clean them AT LEAST once a month or more (more then likely more) depending on it's load (don`t forget the inside of the tube!!! tube needs to stay clean for max flow to turn the wheel). I highly recommend ether having a vary strong sprayer in the sink or buying some long bottle brushes for the thing, makes cleaning a lot easier. Also don't clean the bio wheel with chlorinated water or you may kill off a lot of "good bacteria" that takes so long to grow on it. I personally just used a small stiff paint brush and tank water to "brush" not "scrub" off the excess bio mass from time to time (main reasion it won't turn evenly anymore too). One more thing when you clean your tank/filter let the bio wheel/s float in the tank, don't take them out or the bacteria could dry out and die. Keep the tank filled to the bottom of the filters return (reservoir flow over) if you don't want to hear "turbulent" water the bio wheel makes as it turns. Something I found to be a big help is to twist up the wheel slightly (make the bio wheel have the faint appearance of a cork screw or drill bit, not much, just enough to see that the fins are not horizontal anymore.) Make sure the rotor is correctly seated in the bottom and that the tube support is as well. That right there is where most of the noise problem arises, not putting the stupid propeller and tube back in right after cleaning it or when you first get it.

"Free and clear" did a good job of explaining some of the things I covered as well, I suggest reading their review too.

The cleaner you keep your tank/s the better this and any filter will be able to work, it is a lot of work and that's why I know first hand about this type of tank filter.

The best I have ever used . I have two 30gl. African Cichlid set-ups that I keep over crowded to cut down on the fighting for territory and a 30 gal . community tank and these filters do a great job with the bio-load of each . The bio-wheels do a great job of polishing the water , and a great place to grow good bacteria, this is why they slow down after they been used for awhile , the Bio-wheels build up bacteria and muck , simply rinse them off in dechlorinated water that is the same temp. as your tank water so you do not kill off the bacteria and they will continue to serve you well . Easy to change filters , which I change only one at a time so as not to remove all the bacteria in my filters . And even after my own laziness of going weeks without cleaning it , it will run smooth and whisper quiet . I have never had a problem with noise on any of my 3 Penguin 350 filters , after a water change or power outage just a little shot of water in it to prime it and it starts right up just as quiet as before , and sometimes that is not even needed as the water that was left in it will prime it for me . I will never use any other filter .
